24 hours in London

Seeing all London has to offer in a day is impossible. To get the most out of your day, make a plan. Walkit.com is a good place to start.

Or here is a suggestion as to how you might spend 24 hours in London.

Start the day with a coffee near Embankment tube station then stroll across Hungerford Bridge (the right hand side is best for views of the London Eye and Houses of Parliament). Turn left for a 20 minute walk along the South Bank. Pass beneath Waterloo Bridge to visit the Tate Modern. Take time to explore this converted power station and see some contemporary art.

Leaving the Tate Modern you’ll have a perfect photo opportunity as the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral will be framed against the London skyline across the river in the front of you.

Take the tube from Southwark Station for lunch in Soho (Jubilee Line to Green Park). To get there walk east down Piccadilly to Piccadilly Circus taking a detour down Green Park to see Buckingham Palace. After lunch, take a 20 minute walk to the British Museum before wandering to Clerkenwell for a well-deserved supper.

Head back to the conveniently located and superbly comfortable B&B you booked through The Bed and Breakfast Club and after a great night’s sleep you’ll feel perfectly restored for another long sight-seeing day in the capital.

Head of the River Race - London - Sat 2 April

Rowed on the River Thames from Mortlake to Putney. Plenty of river vantage points for spectators, many of them conveniently close to pubs. www.horr.co.uk

The Head of the River Race is held in March/April each year. Starting just after Chiswick Bridge and finishing just short of Putney Bridge it passes under Barnes Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge along the way. Dating from 1829, this university boat race is billed as “the world’s longest surviving sporting challenge”. Competitors row a gruelling four-and-a-quarter-miles along the Thames from Putney to Mortlake, often against waves and bitter winds, in their quest for the coveted title. Despite being three times the length of an Olympic course, the entire event is over in just 20 minutes, a fact which should not overshadow the six months of sweat and toil which the teams endure in preparation for the big day.
